As much as we want the transfer from our current home to the new as easy possible, still the experience would be too stressul for our pets. No matter what it is - dogs, fishes, cats or birds- every one of them requires particular attention when relocating. Because it is not likely for pets to be relocated from one home to the other during their lifespan, we need to make necessary precautions to prepare them for the trip.
You don't have to worry because there are a lot of things you can do as a pet owner to make the moving as stress-free as possible. It is a must that you do a research before the trip about the neighborhood where your next home is located since there are places which have strict rules when it comes to pets. You also need to contact the state veterinarian to gain knowledge about state rules when it comes to pet ownership. Here are more helpful hints in moving in with pets.
See your vet before the trip. It is a must that your pet's health history be transferred from your current vet to the new one. If you don't have a veterinarian yet in your new location, you can ask some suggestions from your current vet if she knows someone around your new place. And remember not to lose contact with your current vet in case your new vet needs information regarding your pet.
Pet Carriers. You should have a sturdy pet carrier which is large enough for your pet to stand if it wants, and chose those with a sufficient ventilation. You can find these pet carriers in your local vet, and in some airlines if you make prior arrangements.
Plan the trip. Plan the route which you will take if you are travelling by land. You may checkout the hotels along the way of they allow pets incase stopvers are inevitable. To feed your pet, secure a pet dish and put it somewhere handy. However, it is advised not to feed your oet three to four hours before travel.
Check courier regulations. You need to check on airline regulation concerning how pets should behandled, or at least check first if the airline allows animals if you are travelling by plane. Remember to have the necessary documents and photos handy in case some airlines need it. It is also advised that you mark the container with these words - "FRAGILE. LIVE ANIMAL."
Keep your routine. To minimize pet’s stress, you need to follow your routine in your previous like create familiar surroundings. The food it eats, the water dishes, bed, blanket and toys and keep things should be placed in the same location. In order to get your pet familiar to your new home, take it to a walk a day after you move in.
Continue your routine so your pet won’t be stressed about its new environment. Remeber also to spend some time to visit the new veterinarian recommended to you so you can talk about ongoing medications for your pet if there is any, or vaccinations and de-worming concerns. You need not worry anymore. Just follow those steps above for a smooth relocation with your pet.
